Embracing Reston

by Aubrey Mantoni

You know, Reston never held a special place in my heart... until I made it my home.

Having grown up in Loudoun county, Sterling specifically, I was a little biased to begin with.. In my twenties, I went on countless sales calls across Northern Virginia and whenever I had sales calls in Reston, I knew it would be interesting.

The houses in Reston stood apart, they had a distinct character compared to those in Loudoun County or other parts of Fairfax County. The older homes, adorned with solar panels and boasting intriguing architecture, held a charm that took me a while to truly appreciate.

Back then, I couldn't fully grasp the vision of Robert E. Simon.

Reston isn't just a geographical location; it's a vibrant community nestled in western Fairfax County, Virginia, within the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Envisioned as an alternative to struggling cities and sprawling suburbs, Reston, alongside Columbia, Maryland, emerged as one of the pioneering post–World War II “new towns” in the United States. Founded in 1964 by Robert E. Simon Jr., Reston derived its name from Simon’s initials, embodying an urban utopia featuring swimming pools, community centers, and tennis courts in every neighborhood, with no racial restrictions.

Initially overseen by Gulf Oil—Simon’s primary lender—and later by Mobil, the community steadily grew. By 2007, its population had reached approximately 60,000, and Reston enjoyed a robust economy driven by high technology and information.

In my journey as a real estate agent, I've developed a deep appreciation for the unique allure that Reston exudes. The older homes tell tales of a community that has gracefully evolved, each residence contributing to the rich tapestry of this lively town. The presence of solar panels not only signifies a commitment to sustainable living but also adds a distinctive flair to the architectural landscape.

Walking through Reston's neighborhoods, I sense the echoes of its history. It's more than just a town; it's a meticulously planned lifestyle. Robert E. Simon Jr.'s vision of a community with amenities catering to every resident has truly withstood the test of time.
